Alex Liberfield
Alex Liberfield founded his first investment fund while studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, his work has focused on alternative investments and derivatives, with particular experience in options, futures and volatility strategies.
He views derivatives as a language for expressing investment ideas with precision: defining exposures, structuring asymmetry and separating a view on an asset from a view on its timing, volatility or path. This perspective informs his approach to portfolio construction and risk.
Having lived across Europe, North America and Southern Africa, Alex developed an investment outlook that is inherently international. He is interested in how developments in one part of the world move through currencies, commodities, capital flows and investor behavior to produce consequences elsewhere.
His research frequently sits at the intersection of markets and the wider forces shaping them, including geopolitics, technological change, policy, demographics and shifts in global economic power. He is particularly drawn to situations in which complexity has been simplified away, relationships between markets are changing, or prevailing assumptions no longer reflect the world as it is.
At the center of his work is a longstanding question: how can investors make intelligent decisions when the future is uncertain, the relevant variables are interconnected and the most important risks cannot be reduced to a model?
